In these photographs, history and its layers resonate in the moment. Many of the sacred places I have photographed are ruined, or have nearly vanished. Columns and small details show the past, while everyday objects show how the places are still used.
A plastic chair meets walls built centuries ago. Scarves and candles speak of today’s habits and rituals. For me, expressions of different cultures and their layers appear side by side – parallel, equally valued.
Scraps of paper, strips of fabric, small written notes – each one carrying a wish or a hope. What people ask for is not so different.
In these places, you can sense the slow movement of time. Countless footsteps have worn the stone floors smooth, and candle smoke has drawn black marks on the walls – touching the surface beneath your hand, you feel the history – these layers of faith, history and tradition across Anatolia are really special.
